The story takes place shortly after Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde launches its first attack on the planet Sera. It follows Kilo Squad, led by Lt. Damon Baird, with members Pvt. Augustus “Cole Train” Cole, Sofia Hendrik, and Garron Paduk. The narrative unfolds in the form of a military tribunal, where the squad is on trial for disobeying orders.

The game’s levels are presented through the testimonies of each squad member, as they recount their version of the events. Kilo Squad is charged with treason for defying orders and launching a Lightmass Missile to destroy a Locust-controlled city in an effort to stop a new enemy, the Rager.

In the final section, the squad’s actions are revealed as they fight to survive the Locust assault and prevent the Ragers from reaching the human population.
